Alchemist by Paulo Coelho - Review

Book Synopsis: Alchemist is a story about a Spanish Shepard boy who goes from Spain to Egypt in search of a treasure after meeting a mysterious gypsy woman and a man who called himself the king. In that journey, the boy learns valuable lessons about life through many trials and tribulations.

Book Review: Alchemist is one of the most popular books among the book reading community and it is one book that almost every avid reader recommends to the new beginners. The main moral of this book is that one shouldn't give up their dreams too easily and when you don't give up the whole universe will conspire to help you achieve it.

It is the main moral of the story, but there are many other things in this novel helpful in turning our life around and teaching us about understanding the world not through the biased lens but by learning the language of the world. It is a language spoken by the universe, and if one can understand that language he can see the signs to find his destiny. The language of the world is hard to learn, it is a language that doesn't use words but requires you being one with the universe. The best example of the language of the world is love.

Love & Destiny

Santiago & Fathima fell in love with each other at first sight, it's like their love is like a fairy tale, like destiny itself made them fall in love. They experienced a magical feeling even though they never met. They communicated with the universal language called love.

War & Chaos

In The Alchemist, the author present war as just another manifestation of the soul of the universe, a way of balancing things out. However, he also tells us that nowhere is safe from war and showed how the woman felt about the war and how they lost their sons and husbands.

Chasing your Destiny

Like I said before, this book encourages the readers to pursue the dreams before it's too late and if you pursue your dream earnestly you will achieve it with the help of the universe.

Learning about the World

The alchemist tells you that if you will set aside your prejudice and keep an open mind, you will learn about the world since it is an open book, to begin with.

There are many philosophies in this novel that you won't get if you are leafing through the pages, instead, you need to concentrate and read it with interest. There are many interesting quotes in this novel that had a profound effect on me. One of my favourite quotes in this book is

“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity.”

This is something almost every human being experienced once in their lifetime

While there are many positive things in this novel but there is one complaint that I have about it. This book is short and it should have been much longer developing the character of Fathima and other supporting characters.  This is a first-ever novel that I completed in one sitting, this is one of the best books that I ever read. So pick this one and read in your free time.
